Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier says he ‘could have done a lot better’ this season as competition for England right-back slot heats up

However, his club form this season has been very indifferent – which includes a calamitous own goal during Spurs’ Premier League defeat against Chelsea last month.

It’s led to suggestions that he has fallen behind as England’s first choice right-back, with talkSPORT’s Danny Murphy suggesting Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is an ‘upgrade’ on Trippier. There is huge competition for the slot with the likes of Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold also vying for being the first choice right-back for Gareth Southgate’s men.Trippier also missed a penalty for Spurs during their FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace3

And while Trippier said the competition was good, he admitted there have been moments this season for Spurs where he’s looked back and felt he could have done better.Speaking to talkSPORT’s Nigel Adderley ahead of England’s games against Czech Republic and Montenegro, he said: “You need to play as many games as you can for your club and perform well as the managers always watching. Its very good competition.I could have done a lot better this season. Ive picked up some injuries and there are games where Ive looked back and thought I could have done this better but its all about learning.I admit I could have done better but Im here now and Ive got to try and impress so I can start for England.”

Due to England’s extensive campaign in Russia, many of their players did not have as much time off as usual before the beginning of the 2018/19 season as they were used to.And when asked if this was a problem, Trippier replied: Obviously it was a long World Cup getting to the semis and stuff but you do need that break. You look at some players like H [Harry Kane], the lads from Manchester City, and the Premier League comes around straight away. Its what we do, its our job and we all want to play so people can say that was the reason why but I dont think it was. I think its one of those things, you get injuries. Rest is the most important thing and it would have been nice to have an extra week or something but the season comes around quickly so youve just got to get on with it.”However, despite his lack of form, Trippier says he wants to make many more appearances for his country.Trippier added: I dont want this to stop now, I want to keep on going as long as I can.Weve got a good group, a loyal team and Gareth is loyal to his players but you need to perform for your clubs and thats the most important thing to get selected.”There are potentially exciting times ahead for Gareth Southgate and England3
