Football Association’s Brexit plan will reduce number of overseas players in Premier League squads
Plans put forward by the Football Association will see the Premier League’s homegrown players rule drastically changed to deal with Brexit. An FA proposal is to be discussed at Thursday’s Premier League shareholders’ meeting, with The Times claiming the number of overseas players in every squad will be reduced from 17 to 12 under the new rules.Premier League chairmen will discuss the proposal later this week2

This means more than half (13) of every 25-man squad must be made up of homegrown players – those who have spent three years in an English or Welsh club’s academy between the ages of 16 and 21.The proposal is being put forward to the Premier League clubs to secure them favourable circumstances for the post-Brexit world, with a no-deal situation a potential disaster for England’s top flight; in this scenario, all EU players would have to be awarded a work permit under the same restrictions as non-EU players currently are. To sweeten the deal, the FA are believed to be ready to offer a ‘governing body endorsement’ to the Premier League, which will ensure every foreign player who signs a contract with a top flight side will be granted a work permit, regardless of whether they would be handed one now based on current guidelines.Five teams, including Manchester City, have the maximum number of overseas players (17) in their current squads2

Only seven of the current 20 Premier League clubs would be fine if the new rules were brought in today, with Crystal Palace and Wolves matching the proposed limit of overseas players (12). Southampton, Everton Cardiff, Burnley and Bournemouth are also below the limit, with the Cherries having just five overseas player in Eddie Howe’s squad.
