Manchester United were forced to pay Jose Mourinho and the five staff members who left the club with him 19.6million, the club’s financial results have revealed.Mourinho, the Portuguese, was sacked in December and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis, with United going on a remarkable run under the Norwegian to climb into the Premier League’s top four.2

The former Chelsea manager signed a three-year contract when appointed by United in May 2016, and he penned an extension to 2020 – with the option of a further year – last January.However, he was dismissed less than a year after putting pen to paper on the fresh deal, and the pay-off to sack Mourinho has cost the Old Trafford clubfour times the amount they had to pay predecessors David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal when they were fired in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The 19.6million payout is listed in United’ssecond-quarter financial results under ‘exceptional items’, and includes payments made to Mourinho as well as the five members of staff who left the club at the same time as the Portuguese.In the report, the club announced record revenues of 208.6million for the quarter, which translate into earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 104.3million and an operating profit of 44million.As well as replacing the Mourinho regime with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan, the club also agreed new contracts with Anthony Martial, Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Scott McTominay.These deals helped lift the club’s wage bill for the quarter, which ended on December 31, to 77.9million, an increase of 8.2million (11.8 per cent) on the corresponding period a year ago.2

United rewarded Mourinho with a new contract less than a year before he was sacked

Commercial revenue, thanks to new sponsors such as Remington, inched up to 65.9million, although the retail and merchandising part of that equation fell slightly, and matchday proceeds increased by 2.1million (5.7 per cent) on 12 months ago, primarily due to playing one more Champions League game at home.But the real boost came from broadcasting, up 28.5million (37.9 per cent) to 103.7million, as UEFA’s new Champions League broadcasting deal really started to kick in.In a statement, executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: “The appointment of Ole and Mike as caretaker manager and assistant manager has had a positive impact throughout the club.“We are delighted with the improvement in the team’s performances since December and we look forward to a strong finish to the 2018/19 season.”
